How Can One Get Rid Of Excessive Mucus In The Throat After A Mild Stroke?

Husband had mildish stroke Thanksgiving night, (base of brain stem) except for continual and excessive mucus requiring constant spitting up of thick white sticky mucus and some difficulty in eating dry foods, he s recovered surprisingly well. DR urges drinking plenty of water, has done so, but problem persists.

Hi,

Noted the history about your husband having problem of excessive mucus production in throat after mild attack of brain stroke, and some difficulty in eating dry foods.
First of all it would be important to know whether there is any diabetes or hypertension that caused the stroke.
Since your husband has recovered well from heart stroke there is not much to worry about and the cause of excessive mucus production needs to be found out.
I would advise him the following in such a situation:
Consult an ENT Surgeon for clinical examination, ENT Endoscopy to know the cause and get treated accordingly.
It is imperative that one has to follow the medications as per the possibility due to any pre-existing diseases as mentioned above hence a set of routine medications can not be given, these are given on merits and hence need to follow the prescription.
Give sips of warm water and steam inhalations as these help to clear the mucus, gives smoothness.
Avoid any foods, beverages and factors that increase the mucus production.
Also ask about any medications already given that can increase mucus production.

I hope this answer helps you. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,

Dr. T Chandrakant,
