How Can Osteoarthritis In The Hips And Shoulders Be Treated?
i have oteoaritus in my left hip also nerve damagein upper shoulder also osterporosis and scholiosis and have been cancer free for 12 yrs i do not want any painkillers i was on lyerica i cant spell these big words but last month my Dr told me after being on the lyrica for 6 mos that it is a controlled substance now yrs ago i was put on vicodin tramodol xanax i went off all of these and it has been over eight yrs and my dr knows my concerns and my pain so now what new meds are out there i see him tomorrow but i havelost confidence in him i just want to be out oof pain bbut no narcoticseven when i went to the hospital with a broken rib i have made it clear no controlled narcotics. they give me a shot of toradol sorry for the spelling . iam 60 yrs old .

Unfortunately the treatment of osteoarthritis is still pain relief. Nothing else has been very easy or effective, though surgical options including joint replacements are options these days but not easy and not for every patient.
Still, most patients would be given pain relief and opioids as a part of it as we cannot give other painkiller (like NSAIDS) for a long time. However, still we have other options like you can use regular paracetamol, or hot/cold application to the affected joints. Steroid injections in the joints is another pretty effective ( but not permanent) option. So you can try these if you don't like opioids. Although opioids are not that bad if used judiciously.
