How Can Pain During A Pap Smear Test And Intercourse Post Menopause Be Managed?

I have gone through menopause and getting a pap smere and examine is extremely painful, not to mention intercourse. My GYN suggested the drug Osphena but due to my history of breast cancer, I am afraid to take it. Also, I haven t checked yet but I have a feeling that this drug is not covered by insurance and from I m reading is $200.00 for 30 pills, one months supply. Not many people can afford that. So, is there any other medication or over the counter product you can recommend. If I don t find something I know I will avoid going for yearly pap smears because it feel like a knife cutting me, very painful and I can take pain.

Hi,

Yes, you are very right certain drugs may be too expensive for people and we should always consider the cost of the drug.

Painful intercourse after menopause is not uncommon and mostly secondary to dryness of vagina.

You can use some topical estrogen which may help. That is pretty affordable and may well work for you. Discuss this with your gynecologist and also to see your Pap smear.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
