Hi,I am Dr. Gopal Goel (Orthopaedic Surgeon). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I recently starting jogging and after only three days of it I came home and stretched and I feel as if I pulled a muscle in my lower back making it painful to even stand up straight. What can I do to fix it and how can I prevent myself from doing it again? Should I get it checked out? It's been a day now and it is still some what painful to stand up straight.
The commonest cause for muscle strain (pull) lack of warm up before exercise resulting in over stretching of the muscle and pain. I would recommend you to see a MD and get and an assessment (if required an Xray) done to rule out any abnormality. Further your MD should refer you for physical therapy as they are the experts in treating conditions like yours. In the mean time I would suggest you to do ice packing over the painful area (if you don't have ice packs, wrap some ice cubes in a towel and keep over the painful area for about 15 minutes and repeat this 3-4 times a day. This would help reduce acute inflammation causing pain. But next time please make sure that you perform a proper warm up before exercise/jog.
Hope this helps. Dr Sahsi.
