Hi,I am Dr. Andrew Rynne (Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
How Can Recurrent UTI And Appetite Loss Be Treated?
I have an 84 yr old sister who has repeatedly had uti about every 3-4 months. She is type 2 diabetic and has had renal failure. She is sleeping more often than often and for longer periods than normal, has little appetite and only walks from her chair to bathroom and return or to dining table and back to chair; sleeps about 10-12 hrs. How can she get more exercise?
As regards the recurrent UTI it is important that your sister increases fluid intake which would reduce risk of UTI. Cranberry juice also reduces the risk of UTIs.
As regards exercise she might need to be seen by a physiotherapist who might give her specific exercises. She might also need a mobility aid (walking stock or frame) to help her mobility.
As regards appetite- might she be depressed? Depression is a cause for decreased appetite. (if so she might need treatment for this)
Kind Regards
