How Can Recurrent UTI Be Treated?

92 yr old male with a catheter keeps getting uti. his dr says he wont give him antibiotics inless he is running a temp. He is normally alert and oriented. But he gets very confused when he has the infection, which in turn causes him to be very stressed and agitated and dosent sleep well either. What can I do besides the antibiotics that would help when he has them, or help prevent them. Thank you for any insight.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.

I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

I really appreciate your concern at the age of 92 years. If this is the infection and proved clinically, then it requires the antibiotic least concern whether it is the febrile condition or not. I would suggest to get done the routine blood test and look for increased white blood cell and send the urine for culture sensitivity test for to confirm the infection. If no infection is there, then not need for antibiotic. Fever is not the matter of concern in either way.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
