Have a mild case of scabies and am in a rural area so no access to normally prescribed anti-scabies medications like Derbac-M or Permetrin 5%. I am trying to figure out what alternative might work in killing/slowing down its progression? Would like to try with: 1)Alcohol, 2)Listerine, 3)Table Salt. Will any of these kill the scabies mite? Thank you
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
Scabies is treated by applying antiscabetic lotion for all family members whether they have skin lesions or not. In case of any pus or secondary infection, the infection should be treated first and followed by antiscabetic lotion application. In addition, all clothing and bedding should be washed. This is the treatment protocol for scabies. In my experience, the most common mistake done by patients is that all family members usually do not apply the antiscabetic medication. This leads to recurrence.
As you are in rural area, you ask for Benzyl Benzoate solution. Please do avoid alcohol, listerine and table salt. These can severely damage your skin.
Hope you got the answer. Thank You. Get well soon.

Dr. P. Siva Subramanian.
