Hello. Welcome to 'Ask A Doctor'. I have read your query and here is my advice which I trust will make your infant more comfortable.
The best treatment is 5% permethrin cream which should be applied from head to feet. Leave it on her skin for 12 hours before you rinse it off. Permethrin needs to be applied thoroughly in thin, even coat especially to web spaces between fingers and toes, navel, genitals, and
the crack between the buttocks.
Give a second treatment with permethrin one week later to kill any remaining insects.
Be aware that itching can persist for several weeks after treatment.
It can be treated with anti-itch(e.g. Prax or Pramagel) or 1% hydrocortisone cream. All available over-the-counter.
Three more bits of advice, please:
-Clothing, towels, and bed linen need to be machine washed in HOT water and dried on HIGH-HEAT setting.
-Household members and other close contacts should also be treated at the same time as your infant daughter is treated for the first time.
-Those who are not infants should have the permethrin cream applied from neck to feet.
Hope I have answered your query. If You have any further questions, I will be happy to help.
Arnold Zedd, MD, FAAP
