Hi,I am Dr. Andrew Rynne (Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
How Can Sciatic Pain And Spinal Stenosis Be Treated?
Dear Dr. Rynne, I am a 74-year old male with constant and sometimes disabling pain from sciatica (4 damaged discs from a bad fall--2 badly, with nerves exposed like spaghetti) plus arthritic spinal stenosis. No meds have been effective or acceptable to me. Overall,bb I have to say that the pain is tolerable, though it sometimes restricts what I can do physically. My doctor (a state-of-the-art pain specialist) offers a variety of surgical treatments ranging from simple injections of pain blockers to implantation of electronic devices. I have heard and read many horror stories of spinal surgery that has gone wrong--Warriors coach Steve Kerr is a well-known example. What advice would you offer?
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
With your age in question surgery is only advisable if you cannot tolerate the pain or cannot do your daily regular activities. If you are managing then just be on your drugs and keep checking your renal parameters. Do not exert too much and keep changing your position. Use beds with hard base.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
