How Can Severe Dehydration While Suffering From UTI Be Treated?

Good Evening. Thank you for being available. I'm an old woman who may have severe dehydration. I have a UTI for which I'm taking antibiotics. Almost every time I stand get light headed, start shaking, sometimes fall and black out for a few ? seconds. I've hit my head a lot. Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

You are correct to be concerned! During an infection, the standard medical advice is to make sure that you stay hydrated. You can do this by making sure you drink at least 2 liters (half a gallon) of water per day. If do you suffer from severe dehydration then I recommend an Oral Rehydration Solution (ORS) pack which is available at your local pharmacy, the pharmacist will instruct you the correct dosage. If these symptoms have been there for a long period of time (present long before your UTI symptoms), then I suggest you contact a physician and get evaluated (including blood pressure and hemoglobin levels- as well as check your iron stores to ensure you have no deficiency), this would be the most common cause of any generalized fatigue, but rarer causes such as Addison's disease could be another indicator.

When you speak to your doctor next and if you are on any medication for your blood pressure then I suggest that you inform him your doctor of these symptoms. I also suggest that if you've had a history of falls to get X-rays/CT scans of your skull to rule out any fractures/bleeding.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
