Hello! Welcome to HealthcareMagic!

According to the history you provided, mostly your father was suffering from depressive episode. Regarding treatment: there are two possibilities:

1) The drug dose may not be sufficient.
2) The medicine he's using may not be working well. If I would be your treating psychiatrist, I would re-examine your father and reconfirm the diagnosis. If the diagnosis is correct, I will try with an antidepressant with full dose for at least 2-3 months. If it's not working, I will shift to another antidepressant. Also add cognitive behavioral therapy and relaxation techniques to cope with stress. Sleep disturbances are part of the depressive episode itself. So, they too should be addressed along with depression by medications and maintenance of sleep hygiene.

Hope that clarifies your concerns. Thank you for the query.

Take care

Psychiatrist Dr. Gayathri's  Response
Hello! Welcome to HealthcareMagic!

In my opinion he needs to go for a full check-up like blood sugars, lipids and thyroid function tests. It is important to also know about antidepressants like Mirtazapine that is very useful in treating depression along with sleep disturbances.

Hope this clarifies your concerns. Thank you for the query.

Take care
