How Can Severe Osteoporosis Be Treated?

I have a friend who is 78 yrs old, has severe osteoporosis, has had 3 compression fx of lower back---once a month. The only treatment they offer is a brace and medication. She wants to die because she has no options--just wait for the next fx. What options does she have??

Hello,

The best option for osteoporosis is prevention and early diagnosis. Your friend at 78 years seemed to have missed the opportunity. You can try using Teriparatide, parathormone injections which help in making new bone.

Avoid exercises but be active, as much as she can. Indeed some HRT with Estrogens, or Raloxifene if no contraindications will be helpful. The other drugs like Calcium Vitamin D need to be continued. Psychotherapy has to be actively done to help her enjoy life.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
