How Can Severe Pain In The Ribcage After An Injury Be Treated?

My wife suffered four fractured ribs in an auto accident. It has been eight months since the accident and fractures have not completely healed and she has been told that at her age (84) that is not unusual. Recently then fractured ribs have sagged and one of them is in contact with a hip bone and is causing persistent serious pain. So far none of her doctors have offered a treatment for this condition and she is desperate for some way to ease the pain.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

-take painkillers for he pain such as ibuprofen 400 mg three times a day
-icing the area regularly can help with healing and pain relief.
-use compression wraps to immobilize the area
Most broken ribs heal on their own within six weeks.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
