How Can Sudden Difficulty In Speech After A Nap Be Managed?

Male, 70 yrs. old was fine in the morning. Helped me in the kitchen , we held a good conversation. He went out and shoveled snow and cleaned of the deck. Came in and started watching TV, got sleepy and laid down and feel asleep. When he got up, he can t make a full sentence. All he says is yep nope oh, well, things like that. This happened suddenly. What should I do?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

It is possible that he had a stroke. A stroke occurs when there is either a bleed or an obstruction in blood flow to part of the brain. There are parts of the brain responsible for understanding speech or the ability to speak. He would need assessment and imaging. Treatment would depend on the findings.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
