Hi,I am Dr. Alexander H. Sheppe (Psychiatrist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I’ve been pulling out my hair and eating it for at least 7 years. I’ve recently found out that the hair you eat doesn’t get digested and can accumulate in your stomach and digestive track and cause serious damage. I‘m seeking psychiatric help but, should I see my physician to check if I have a trichobezoar? I don’t have symptoms of having one that I know of, but my condition is quickly getting worse and the hair eating is practically constant. This has been going on for so long. I’m worried I might be developing one. What should I do?
Yes there are chances that you might develop trichobezoar. Go to a psychiatrist and seek a habit reversal behavior like making a fist so you do not have an urge to pull your hair. They will do a relaxation therapy with you every alternate day for some time which will help you combat the hair pulling habit. Also for the trichobezoar thing, I suggest you do a barium meal imaging . It will help you with the diagnosis .
kindly follow up with a surgeon after the scan .
