How Does Infection Spread To Intestines Post Appendix Burst?
Hello, a friend of mine called me from the hospital the other day. She asked me to research the question how infection spreads to the intestines after an appendix burst. This is what happened to her and she explained that the doctors removed a section of the small and large intestine. Also, they are testing to see if she has MRSA and D difficil. What would prompt them to look for those infections as well? So, two question for you to answer please.

HI
Thanks for posting your query.
See Appendix is a part of small intestine . Both small intestine and large infection are present inside the abdomen encased in a sac like structure called Peritoneum .
So when an appendix burst , the pus collection inside the appendix is spread across the peritoneum and since peritoneum is a closed sac the pus gets deposited on the small intestine and large intestine.
Now the appendix has burst because of pus collection inside it . Now this pus is due to bacterial infections ( most commonly ) Different bacteria responds to different antibiotics . Hence knowing which bacteria is the cause of pus is important . MRSA and C.Difficili are bacteria and hence your doctors are investigating for that.
Hope this information was useful to you . Any clarifications feel free to ask .
Regards.
