How Does Puberty Affect Physical Growth In A Child?
My 14 year old recently had his annual physical with the pediatrician. After the regular checkup, the doctor mentioned that my child was virtually done growing based on his stage of puberty. A few weeks later, at an orthodontic appointment, his ortho took a hand and wrist x-ray film. His estimate was for two to four years more growth based on an examination of his growth plates. We are getting two different opinions, here. Obviously, growth is difficult to predict, however, I am curious which analysis is typically more accurate: puberty stage or growth plate evaluation? Thank you.
Brief answer: Growth plate evaluation is more reliable.
Detailed answer: Hi, welcome to HCM. Growth plate evaluation is reliable method of predicting growth in a child. Growth plate evaluation exactly tells that is there any chance of more growth or increase in height. At 14 year of age in boys pubertal changes occurs and there is possibility of growth for 3 to 4 years. I hope this has helped you. Wishing your child good health. Take care.
