How Effective Is Contraception With Intrauterine Loops ?
Hi Doctor, we got our first baby on Jan 04, 2015. Planning not to go for another at least for next 3 years. My elder ones in family have suggested me to go for loop which is a general practice for ladies here in small towns. However, I heard that it gives lot of side effects and also put on weight after loop. Can you please help me whether this is good to go for loop now or usage of condoms? Many thanks for your suggestions. KC
Hi, I have gone through your question and understand your concerns. By loops, I infer that you mean intrauterine contraceptive device. These devices are effective contraceptive methods and have a very low failure rate.Weight gain is not common after its use. Side effects include increased blood flow during menstruation, pelvic infection and expulsion of the device from the uterus, however they are not very common. You can definitely choose between condom and IUCD, but even with proper use of condom, the failure rate is 2 %, which is more than that of IUCD. Hope you found the answer helpful. Wishing you good health. Dr Deepti Verma
