Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
Every treatment that is suggested and applied by doctors should outweigh the benefits over the risks. Maybe in your son's case it is too dangerous to perform surgery because may be very risky. So sometimes in this cases doctors think that observing the cyst and not touching it may be better, or they outweigh other possible options or treatment. Of course I cannot tell which is the best treatment for the case of your son because I do not know the details of his MRI, or his overall health condition. The best people who can do this are the doctors who have followed him.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
