How Long Do Abdominal Cramps After Insertion Of Paragard IUD Last?
Hi -
My girlfriend had a Paragard IUD inserted Wednesday and the procedure seemed to go well. The clinic informed her to wait two days prior to having intercourse which she did.
Just tonight Saturday, Feb 4th she has started to experience some heavy cramps following intercourse. I have read online that cramps can be common for up to a few weeks after the procedure but she told me she would consider these to be much heavier than what she has experience in the past.
She is sleeping now and said she does not want to go to the ER but I am still worried. Is there anything in particular I should keep an eye out for tonight that would suggest an emergency? Perhaps a time-frame on when the pain should have subsided by? If for any reason she must go to the ER I won't give her any choice on the matter.

Abdominal cramps can happen with IUD.
Generally, it will settle in couple of weeks.
As of now, you can take analgesics like Mefenamic Acid for symptomatic relief. If symptoms persist, you can consult a gynecologist and check whether the coil is misplaced or not.
