Hi,I am Dr. Alexander H. Sheppe (Psychiatrist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I have been taking Azilect for three weeks and feel like I am going back to my pre-Parkinsons symptoms. I was on 6 mg ropinirole daily for one year since my diagnosis. Because problems with upset stomach my neurologist put me on Azilect (.5 mg daily and now 1 mg daily). I have no stomach problems now but the drug hasn t kicked in yet. How long should I wait before good results appear?
Azilect is Resagiline and is a nice drug for early stages of Parkinson's disease. The drug acts by inhibiting MAO-B enzyme which is the enzyme that is involved in metabolism of neurotransmitters that are deficient in brain of Parkinson's disease patient. As you have been discontinued with Ropinirole and are started on this drug the drug will take some time to show its full effects. It has been 3 weeks now and I would advise you to wait for at least one more week to see its best results. Some times if patient don't respond to one drug there is need to add one more adjuvant drug to get full effect. Visit your doctor after one week to get evaluation again.
Azilect may take a few weeks to show its response in some people. Please do not worry and continue taking the medicine. If you are tolerating it well, your doctor may also consider raising the dose slightly for better response.
Best wishes.
