Hi,I am Dr. Subhankar Chakraborty (Gastroenterologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I was on Asacol HD twice a day, 3200mg. I have had diarrhea now about 5 weeks. Went to a new GI who was curious if it was the Asacol. Been off of it for 2 1/2 days. Some diarrhea, but I feel better and the diarrhea is different too. I lost 10 lbs. I weigh 109. I m 5 4 . Not good. Should I consider going on Budesnide or wait a few more days to see how diarrhea gets? How long does it take to get out of my system?
Hi. Thanks for your query. Noted the history of taking Asacol HD 3200 twice a day, diarrhea for about 5 weeks, lost 10 lbs, consulted another Gastroenterologist who wondered if Asacol cause it hence stopped for the last two and half days with which symptoms improved. Thinking of going on Budesonide. I would advise you the following in such a situation: Send the daily stool sample for 3 consecutive days. If this shows an infection, then a course of an antibiotic and metronidazole may cure your problems. Revision Colonoscopy and CT scan may be needed. Tests of blood to see for diabetes, thyroid, liver and kidney functions may be needed. These will give a better diagnosis and hence a plan for treatment. Budesonide alone may not help and can be dangerous.
