Hi,I am Dr. Amitkumar Sharma (Internal Medicine Specialist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I am a 32 year female and suffered from Asama for most of my preteen stages of my life, last I came down with respiratory complications, I visited my Doctor who prescribed mucinex which I have been taking since seeing hem, so can you explain what to expect from this medication and how long does it take for it to work?
Guaifenesin, is an expectorant medication that aids in the elimination of sputum from the respiratory tract. Basically it aids your respiratory tract in expelling excess slime / sputum. It is often used in combination with other medications, in this case your asthma medicine. It works by reducing the viscosity of secretions, making it easier for your respiratory tract to expel the excess mucus.
It should take effect within 1-2 hours of ingestion, and you should feel the effects from now. A medication with more or less the same, or better, effect would be the blue medication you take for your asthma - usually called a SABA or quick relief. If you have problems with excess mucus / sputum and coughing, i would increase the dosage once ever 4-6 hours.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Maria Riechel-Sarup, General & Family Physician
