Hello,
Propylthiouracil generally takes almost 3 to 4 weeks to reach its peak response in a patient with
hyperthyroidism such as your case.
This is the time your doctor would like to recheck your Thyroid tests to see if the response is adequate or needs more or fewer medications.
To being thyroid functions to normal takes time and depends on the level of severity. Usually, it takes 6 to 8 weeks for the thyroid test to come back to normal. Many times it might take even more time.
That is why your doctor will call you for an appointment after every 4 weeks until your test is normal and then may slowly reduce medication and switch off if needed.
Regarding surgery, it is safe to wait for the Thyroid functions to normal within 6 to 8 weeks to undergo surgery.
But if your blood pressure and other problems are under control that few surgeons to carry out surgery if it is urgently required.
For your case, they will wait for tests to come back to normal.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Take care
Regards,
