hi doctor,my husband got typhoid and was treated for the same and is on strict diet (no spicy foods,no non-veg,and alcohol)since 1 month . my question is when can he get back to his normal diet like non-veg or spicy foods? and is a repeat blood test(widal) necessary to know whether he is completely normal? please suggest me.
Hi. Thanks for your query. Noted the history about your husband and understood your concerns. This is a good question. Typhoid take about a few weeks to get cured if treated properly by antibiotics for which typhoid bacteria are sensitive . Typhoid affects the last part of the small intestine and hence is advise soft and bland diet as you are doing absolutely right. Since it is already a month your husband can restart the normal diet gradually over one to three more weeks . There is no need to repeat the test as it will usually come positive in spite of being cured. The tests to be done is culture and sensitivity of the blood if there is repeat fever or pain in abdomen or any other symptoms that develop, otherwise no tests are necessary. Give boiled and cooled water and homemade fresh foods.
