1st seizure on june 2007..the day before did not had lunch, dinner but was on heavy alchohol, slept only for one hour... had medicines (do not remember the names) after consulting a doctor in chennai GH. But on 2008 Aug had another seizure accompanies by diarrea and vomitting. 3 weeks admitted on hospital and doctors told me that creatinine level was shoot up due to the side effects of the medicines. Later I was put on encorate chrono morning 500 and night 500 until 2013 Jan. Later reduced the dosage and stopped the medicine on Oct 2013. But after 2 months had some guidiness feel and when consulted a neurologist in chennai he advised me to continue Valparin chrono 300 daily morning and night and iam on this medication from Jan 2014. Can you let me know when i can stop this medicine?

Internal Medicine Specialist, Dr. Divakara's Response
HI Thanks for posting your query to Healthcaremagic .
Well there are no clear cut guidelines for stopping Anti-epileptic drugs ( Valparin in your case ). But in my practise any patient who is seizure free for more than 3 years , can be considered for tapering of dose followed stopping the medication.
Giddiness is not a sign or symptoms of Seizure . If I was your doctor I would have not re started Valparin but would have searched for cause of giddiness . I would have started Valparin only if you had any unexplained loss of consciousness or Seizure .
So as per my advise you can start reducing the dose for 3 months and then you can stop . But all said kindly discuss the same with your Neurologist before making any change .
Any clarifications or Queries feel free to ask. Happy to help you. Regards.
