How Long Should I Continue Having Mesacol For Ulcerative Colitis?
Hi , my name is sam , I am suffering from ulceratimve colitis for past twelve years . Right now I am taking Mesacol 1600 mg and Azoron 100 mg per day . Now iam feeling happy as i dont find any symptoms . My worry is for how long I have to take this medicine and is there any problem by taking several years....
Unfortunately, ulcerative colitis is one of the few diseases that require lifelong treatment to maintain the disease. The only cure for ulcerative colitis is a total colectomy, or total removal of the colon. You can try a probiotic, however, there is limited research on the efficacy. In addition, omega-3 fatty acids, seal and cod liver oil, dietary lactulose, wheat grass juice, vitamin D, and diets with decreased meat and alcohol have been recommended to reduce relapses and improve systemic symptoms; however, there is inconsistent evidence to support these claims. Therefore, you will need to continue to take Mesacol and Azoron daily.
Colon cancer risk is the single most important factor affecting long-term prognosis of ulcerative colitis. You should have a colonoscopy every 1-2 years to rule out colon cancer.
