How Long Should The Thyroid Medications Be Taken?

Warm greetings Doctor,
I am 37 years old a thyroid patient. I have been taking medicines for the past two years and now when I went for thyroid test the result was normal and all test results were within the prescribed limit. My question is how long I have to take the medicines? Kindly do the needful. Happy day ahead. Thank you.

Welcome and thank you for asking on HCM!
To give you a proper answer first i would need to know the pathology you have; hypo or hyperthyroidism?
If it is hyperthyroidism (over active thyroid),usually the treatment with oral tablets is recommended for 12-18 months. Than depending on the pathology that has caused hyperthyroidism (nodular goiter or Graves' disease) a definite treatment is recommended (surgery or radioactive iodine).
If you are diagnosed with hypothyroidism, the treatment usually is long life.
So please attach the exams you have done until now so i can give you a proper answer.
Kind regards,
Dr.Mirjeta Guni
