Hi,I am Dr. Alexander H. Sheppe (Psychiatrist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My brother had a long history with drugs, but rehabbed and was clean for year. Then his wife started using bath salts, he's now taking them too. They have a young child that we are extremely concerned about. I found a lab that will test them for salts, specifically. They don't think a drug test will turn anything up, so they are willing to take the test. Should I choose a urine test, a blood test, or a plasma test from the lab? How long do these drugs stay in the body?
First, bath salts are really dangerous and part of the problem is that they include many different drugs all under the same label. The ability to test for drugs requires knowing what you are looking for; since bath salts can be different drugs, the tests for them are not 100% reliable in finding them. Furthermore, their duration of being found is not worked out all that well. In general, for most drugs about 5 days is the length they can be detected in urine and this is probably true here too. Or they might not be detected. Urine tests are the most sensitive since urine collects what is being filtered out for hours/days. Even after the blood is cleared, urine is usually positive for 2-3 days after the blood.
