How Safe Is Taking Paraxin 500 For Thyphoid During Pregnancy?
My wife is 27years old. She was diagnosed by a doctor for typhoid 3 days back. She was prescribed to have Paraxin 500. But today only we got confirmed that she's pregnant too. and it may be around 2 weeks pregnancy. we have discontinued the medicine, but we are still anxious and worried as well, regarding the side effects of Paraxin 500 on the formation of the embryo. can anybody suggest as to what should we do?
Paraxin 500 contains chloramphenicol and according to FDA it belongs to Category C: Means either studies in animals have revealed adverse effects on the foetus (teratogenic or embryocidal or other) and there are no controlled studies in women or studies in women and animals are not available. Drugs should be given only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the foetus
So its definitely harmfull to baby and i advice to follow your doctor suggestion and be prompt in all future investigations including a thorough Ultrasound scan to to rule out any damage to developing fetus
Hope for the best Dr Santosh
