Hi,I am Dr. Amitkumar Sharma (Internal Medicine Specialist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I have been on suboxone for a couple of years. Have tapered down considerably. I would estimate .25-.30 milligram per day for couple of weeks but has been tough to get off 100%. I had a prescription of tramadol. Yesterday a.m. I took two 50 milligram tablets of tramadol and it was first day I was 100% free of taking suboxone. Did same this a.m. Now today is second day with no suboxone. I was going to do this for a few days....then take one tablet for a few days....then half a tablet....etc. is this a safe and/or effective way to get off medication 100%? Thx, LP
Tramadol has similar properties to Suboxone, so it may be acting as a substitute to prevent withdrawal symptoms. Tramadol itself does have some addictive properties. If it seems to be helping with you getting off the Suboxone, you might want to continue what you're doing, tapering down the Tramadol as you mention. It is advisable to work with your prescribing physician on this process. S/he may have other beneficial advice to get you off the Suboxone. Hope this helps.
