How Serious Is A Grade 4 Liver Damage?

My 11 year old granddaughter was in a car accident and damaged her liver. The doctor called it grade 4 liver damage, the most serious being grade 6. They are monitoring her and keeping her in the hospital for 5 days, no sports or activities for 2-3 months. How serious is this?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Liver injuries in children are usually graded by the depth of the injury in imaging investigations. But the decision to operate is always based on the stability of the child and not on the grade of injury. Stability in this context means maintenance of blood pressure, while closely observing for signs of any ongoing bleeding from the liver injury inside the abdomen. Children who cross the initial critical stage usually recover fast and are typically discharged after a period of observation. Activity restriction for a grade 4 injury is usually between six to 10 weeks.

Hope your grand kid makes speedy recovery.
