How Should Pantoprazole And Sucralfate Be Taken While On An Iron Supplement?

I have anemia (Hgb 8.5) caused by a slow stomach bleed. I have a hiatal hernia (severe) and am on pantoprazole 40 mg bid ongoing. My doctor wants me to take Sucralfate (Carafate) 1 GM 4x daily before meals and bedtime. I am taking iron 325 mg 3x a day. since both of the other meds interfere with iron absorption and there is no way I can take that 2 hours before and after meals with my schedule any way, how do I take all this to get the best absorption of the Iron?

Hello,

Pantoprazole which has to be taken with an empty stomach may decrease iron absorption due to the lowering of stomach acidity.

Therefore the timing of iron ingestion won't make any difference because the acidity is going to be low throughout the day regardless of the timing of pantoprazole dosing.

Sucralfate does not normally interfere with iron absorption but sucralfate is better taken with an empty stomach to achieve better results.

In order to facilitate iron absorption, you can take the iron pills with an empty stomach too at a different time than the other drugs.

In contrary to the other drugs the timing of iron ingestion is not important and can vary from day today.

Just take it at three different times during a day and it won't matter much whether you take it at 10:00, 13:00 and 18:00 today and at 08:00, 12:00, 20:00 tomorrow.

It just has to be split into more doses for better absorption.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care
