How Should Blood Sugar Levels Be Managed While Having Weakness, Nausea And Hyponatremia When One Cannot Consult An Endocrinologist Soon?
Hello! My grandmother 83. Is a type 2 diabetic and was in the hospital 3 weeks ago. When admitted her blood sugar was found to be 479. They treated with insulin 6 units at a time and it never went below 300 with the insulin. They discharged her before 24 hours because her admitting diagnosis was hyponatremia. They discharged her knowing that she only takes oral medication for her diabetes saying she needed to get established with an endocrinologist ASAP. She was discharged 3 weeks ago and cannot get into the endocrinologist until December 12. Her blood sugars have not been below 300 in that time. Her family doctor and kidney specialist will not address the blood sugars. She is extremely weak and nauseous all the time and her care giver my uncle refuses to take her back to the hospital. Her family doctor and kidney specialist say it is the responsibility of the endocrinologist to Adria’s the sugar but she cannot get in until December 12. My question is should she be taken back to the hospital to get the treatment she needs since her appointment is so far away? Please help.
From the details given it is clear that she needs to be put on insulin along with her oral anti-diabetes drugs. A long acting analogue insulin like Glargine 6 to 10 units at night before dinner should be given which will definitely control the high glucose levels. Since the doctors whom she is consulting are not ready to address that issue, it is better she goes to hospital and gets necessary treatment. Glucose levels need to be maintained
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
