How Should Depression With Lack Of Motivation Be Treated?
Hi Doctor, This question is for my mother. She is 49 years old and she is suffering from excessive depression. We are 4 members in the family but for job and education my dad , my brother and i stay away from home and therefore She stays alone at home....she lacks interest in everything except gardening which is her hobby and spends most of her hours in it. She has been subjected to depression from the past 3-4 years and this has been increasing since then....she is not able to be happy about anything and she has lost all the motivation in life. She is very emotional at the same time she has become very adamant and serious in her life, that i hardly see her smiling. Please can you suggest how can i make my mother feel better.
I understand that you are concerned about your mother's depression. After going through the details of her symptoms, it appears that you mother is indeed suffering from a depressive illness. Lack of interest, inability to experience pleasure, withdrawn nature, lack of motivation, etc. are all strong indicators of a depressive illness.
Now that you have been able to identify her problem, it is important that you get her professional help and treatment as early as possible. Depression can be treated with medication (called anti-depressants) or with psychological therapy (counselling). With regular treatment, she should improve and get back to her usual self.
