Hi,I am Dr. Alexander H. Sheppe (Psychiatrist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I am an anesthesiologist. I had a friend contact me today with regards to his girlfriend s latest hospital admission for treatment of diverticulitis. He asked me for advice concerning her lifestyle which includes heavy caffeine intake and occasional use of marijuana. Aside from the moral/legal issues of marijuana use, are there any medical reasons to discourage her use of marijuana from a GI standpoint? I d rather not stick my toe in this issue. I ve always been able to maintain a safe distance from the topic, but I don t want to steer them wrong.
I think u r asking about cannabis effect on gastrointestinal system. there are lot of research have been done on this. few studies show its beneficial effects and few show harmful effect. The most common gastrointestinal disorders-Irritable Bowel Syndrome and Inflammatory Bowel Disease-affect millions of people. The disorders are different, but each causes a great deal of discomfort and distress and both can be disabling. Painful cramping, chronic diarrhea or constipation, nausea, and inflammation of the intestines are all symptoms of these GI disorders that can be alleviated by cannabis. Grinspoon reports anecdotal use of cannabis to control bowel movements in multiple sclerosis, and relief from the symptoms of Crohn"s disease. Mikuriya records irritable bowel syndrome, as well as other inflammatory gastrointestinal conditions as one of a wide variety of conditions for which cannabis has been prescribed or recommended for therapeutic use in California. Consroe et al in an anonymous survey of 112 MS patients, found a large proportion reported improvements in bowel and bladder dysfunction from smoked cannabis. Dont worry abt her addiction habbit. Cannabis only cause psychological dependence. there is no effective drug for cannabis dependence except patient's self motivation.
thanks
