Hello, My girlfriend had recently found out that she has herpes, and I would like to know what are the several ways I could possibly get the virus as well. She has gotten the type one herpes, which I believe spreads on the lips and around the face, First question is could I possibly get herpes by giving her a hickey on her neck, my second question is if she has the type one herpes could I possibly have vaginal sex with her without getting the virus and would a condom have any use, and also if I touch her vagina would that also give me a risk of getting herpes? And my final question would be if I kiss her while she does not have any cold sores would that also decrease the chance of me getting herpes or is that just the same? Thank you!
Hello. Thanks for writing to us at healthcaremagic
Herpes type 1 virus typically causes cold sores. It presents as fluid filled lesions on or around the labial mucosa. It is a local infection and therefore labial herpes commonly spreads through kissing. Therefore, vaginal sex would be absolutely safe. The chances of acquiring the virus from her are more during an active episode of cold sores as compared to when the virus is quiescent. Having said that, the virus is being shed from time to time from the labial mucosa and may still be acquired even if she does not have active sores.
