Hi,I am Dr. Subhankar Chakraborty (Gastroenterologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
How To Check The Hydrochloric Acid In The Stomach?
My doctor wants me to have a test done for hydrochloric acid in the stomach, and has suggested that there is a test by placing an NG tube down. This has been suggested since I cannot swallow pills, like Betaine. I live near Portland, Maine and the gastroenterologist there said that they no longer do this and they don t know anyone who does. I cannot find anything online about physicians in the northeast who do this test. Any suggestions as to how to find a doctor? Is there an easier way to check for HCL acid without having to swallow pills?
My friend, i am not sure from your given history what is your distressing problem in this age of your gender as the betaine is nutritional supplement more often prescribed for poor appetite in elderly and perimenopusal women and higher concentration of HCL in body resulting in Acid peptic disease is not a predominant cause of poor eating. As to the measurement test for HCL as suggested by your doc does not require these days to insert a not pleasant Nasogastric tube as once in vogue. We can now measure the HCL indirectly by taking readings of a gastric hormone- Gastrin by submitting the venous blood by immunoassay doing phlebotomy which is a simpler option. Please do ask if doubt is lurking
