How To Confirm If Bloody Bowel Movements Are A Result Of Internal Bleeding Or Ulcerative Colitis?

My husband is on entocourt for ulcerative colitis has been on it now for almost two weeks. Starting to show signs of working but still loosing blood most bowel movements. Good days today bad days. Getting blood test this Saturday for anemia a concern after so much blood loss the past 3 months. How do I tell whether he is bleeding internally or this is just severe flare up. He is 66 and has had since he was in his teens. Thoughts?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Since he is suffering from Ulcerative colitis and is under treatment with Entocourt the cause of internal bleeding is obviously ulcerative colitis unless proved otherwise. Watch for the blood: if fresh it may be from Hemorrhoids or a fissure in ano. If altereed can be from colon. If black stools can be from upper Gastrointestinal tract like gastritis or enteritis. Repeated stool tests and other investigations helps. May need a colonoscopy and CT scan of abdomen. Correction of anemia if present. Supplements of multivitamins and minerals. Further management under the care of a Gastroenterologist. He is suffering for such a long time that is from teens till he has become 66. Means a lot of suffering and adjustments in life which have to be continued.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
