Thank you for your queries. You have quite a lot of them, so i shall answer them one by one. First and foremost, I would like to know your age, gender and duration of your
hypertension,
Diabetes mellitus and dyslipidemia (
high cholesterol).
1. Hypertension can be controlled by lifestyle modifications and medications. Lifestyle modifications include, low salt diet and daily exercise regimen. Medications include calcium channel blockers, ACE Inhibitors or ARBs, Diuretics and Beta blockers. The group of drug best suited for you can be decided by your physician, as per your age and other parameters.
2. Diabetes too, like hypertension, can be controlled by dietary modifications (low refined carbohydrate in diet), daily exercise regime. The drugs comprise of oral anti-diabetic agent and Insulin (again to be decided by your physician). It is advisable to get a blood sugar profile done every 3 months which should consist of Fasting blood sugar, 2hrs post prandial blood sugar and HbAic. This gives an idea of your status of blood sugar. Please get an eye check up done yearly. A urine for ACR level can be done, once in a year, to check your kidney status.
3. High cholesterol can be controlled by restriction of
saturated fat in diet and exercise regimen. Statin group of drugs help to achieve a control. Your desirable
total cholesterol should be less than 170 mg% (since you are also diabetic). Diabetics tend to have a higher
triglyceride level, hence strict restriction of oil and fat in diet must be maintained. A diet high in fibres is preferred. If you are a smoker, to have to quit it as soon as possible.
4. You can take proton pump inhibitors (like omeprazole and pantoprazole) or antacids for your hyperacidity.
Hypertension, Diabetes mellitus and Dyslipidemia are all independent risk factors for coronary artery disease, which can cause an
acute coronary syndrome (or heart attack). However, strict control of these conditions may prevent it. It is not possible to "cure" these conditions, but it definitely possible to control them, to prevent their unwanted effects, as I have mentioned above.
I guess I have tried to put in as many points as possible
Hope this helps you out.
Regards
Dr. Ayusmati Thakur
