Hi there, my husband who is only 27 is on medication for high cholestrol> it is normal at the moment because of the medication. We found out this week that he also has high blood pressure. 5 months ago, his bp was very normal. We are just wondering what can cause it to go so high in such a short period? And what can he do to lower it? Thanks
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
He being an young hypertensive he ll first need evaluation for cause of blood pressure. He should undergo test like kidney function test, renal artery Doppler, Sr cortisol and 24 hr Urinary metanephrines. He should have a healthy lifestyle like avoiding fatty, oily and high calorie diet. Have low salt diet and monitor blood pressure regularly thrice a day for one week then once or twice a week. If BP is persistently more than 140/90 mmhg, then he should be on medicines for it. Regular exercises like brisk walking, jogging according his capacity at least 30 min a day and 5 days a week. Lots of green leafy vegetables, fruits, fish once or twice a week, avoid meat. Avoid smoking and alcohol if any.
