How To Cure Numbness On Top Of Ankle Due To A Cut On Artery From Mirror?

A mirror fell on the inner aspect of my lower leg just below the calf resulting in a laceration. I also cut my artery just a little. I went to the ED and had a tetanus shot and 7 sutures. 24 hrs later I m having numbness below the laceration down to my ankle and top of my foot. Should I be worried?

Hi,

From your description it seems that you not only cut the artery, but also one of the many nerves that supply the skin distal (below, footward) of your laceration. This is not uncommon in a major cut like yours. I've seen it in many of my patients as well as myself.

Since there are many nerves supplying the skin with sensation, I would not be worried too much. You have a good chance that other nerves take over the area in the coming months (give it 4 to 6 months) and the numbness may disappear.

Hope I have answered your question. If you have any further questions I will be happy to help.

Regards,
Dr. Christine Sauer
