How To Detect Pregnancy?

stopped birth control in January b/c I had missed more than 3 pills at least 3 weeks in a row and really screwed up my periods. I had two periods within 2 weeks, and had unprotected sex. I had sex twice in Feb and once in April, but he pulled out those last three times. At the end of Feb, I started throwing up. Most of the time it would be after I ate something, but sometimes it would happen in the morning, or after I brushed my teeth. It would come on randomly. I am still throwing up, at least 1 - 2x a week. I hadn't had a period since Jan. I took tests in Feb, both neg. I took one the first week in April, neg as well. But it was before the last time I had sex. My appetite increased by double, I also got tired a lot more. Got cravings for ice cream all the time. My face also started breaking out, as well as my shoulders. One week I would be constipated with hemmorhoids, one week I will have diarrhea. I thought my hormones were off. I look bloated all the time. I have back aches also. Two days ago I started spotting what looks like dark brown blood. Sometimes there is red, but it doesn't come out on my underwear. It is only when I wipe. It looks sticky, like some clotting. I am not sure if it is discharge or my body trying to have a period. But I also feel something in my stomach, like the feeling of a bubble popping. Or when you are hungry and your stomach is gurgling. I am not hungry, b/c I just ate, but my stomach will start to feel like something is popping. I have an apt on thurs, but I am not sure if I should go to the ER. Is it even still possible I could be pregnant since I am having that dark brown spotting, which might be a period? Is it safe to wait? If I am preg, I don't want to be having a miscarriage.

Hi dear,
I went through your query and I would like to suggest the following:
1) The symptoms that you have mentioned might suggest pregnancy.
2) However, since you have missed so many periods, there could be an hormonal imbalance too.
3) All the pregnancy tests that you have taken were taken before the unprotected sexual intercourse.
4) The brown spotting could be the beginning of a period, or it could also be due to some genital infection or hormonal change. It sometimes happens even when you are pregnant.
5) Coming to your main question, pregnancy can be detected by
a) A urine pregnancy test that can be done at home
b) A blood test called serum beta HCG
c) A pelvic ultrasound
6) I suggest you take either one of these tests and confirm your pregnancy.

Hope this was helpful.
Regards,
Dr. Shikha Shah
