I have a lot of phlegm for four weeks. The phlegm is white. I have seen the doctor twice and the medication is not working.
What am I to do now? Shall I get a medication over the counter to get rid of the phlegm or do I still have to see another doctor again? I am 64 years old and my weight is 53 kg.
Thanks for your question on Healthcare Magic. I can understand your concern. No, you should not take any over the counter drugs. We should definitely first diagnose your condition and then start appropriate treatment. Excessive phlegm production is seen commonly with smokers, bronchitis and lung infection. So better to consult pulmonologist and get done 1. Clinical examination of respiratory system 2. Chest x ray (to rule out lung infection). 3. PFT (pulmonary function test) (for the diagnosis of bronchitis). If you are smoker then smoking cessation is must. You may need antibiotic, inhaled bronchodilator and inhaled corticosteroids (ICS) on the basis of above reports. Don't worry, you will be alright with appropriate drugs. Hope I have solved your query. I will be happy to help you further. Wish you good health. Thanks.
