Hi,I am Dr. Amitkumar Sharma (Internal Medicine Specialist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I took a tetanus shot ( with diphtheria , binding agent was SULFA drug ). I am alergic to SULFA. It s been 4 years and the joint pain started within 10 days and has now caused me great and severe arthritis like pain over my entire body. Can I do anything to get rid of the SULFA drug?
Sulfa moiety which was part of inj. Diphtheria/Tetanus Toxoids given 4 years back is highly unlikely to still remain in your system. Hence question does not arise to eliminate Sulfa moiety. What you had within 10 days of vaccine is serum sickness (immune complex hypersensitivity/type III) like reaction.
With the discontinuation of the offending agent, symptoms usually disappear within 4–5 days. If Arthritis persists, Corticosteroids, analgesics are the main line of treatment.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Dr. Tushar Kanti Biswas,
