sir i i am a scientist in a prestigeous govt. orgabisaion. The work load is telling and many a times I get tensed up. I am in a habit of chewing gutka and I very well understand the harmful effects of the same. I have a loving and caring family comprising of an educatd wife and two lovely daughters. I want to quit this habit but al my efforts have been in vein in the past. Kindly guide me
I do appreciate your willingness to quit chewing gutka. You seem to be dependent on and as a result not able to quit.
Since you are not able to quit on your own, I would suggest you consult a psychiatrist. Multiple options are available . Nicotine substitution by nicotine gums can help in controlling the craving for gutka. In addition, medicines like bupropion and varenicline are effective drugs which help in reducing craving for nicotine.
Any medication must be combined with regular tobacco cessation counseling which will include learning relaxation exercises, controlling cues and improve coping skills. In addition, you must also be be evaluated for any underlying anxiety or depression as you have mentioned that you get stressed easily. Treatment with anti-depressant medications (Bupropion can be used as it acts both as anti-depressant as well anti-craving fro tobacco) can be initiated. You should also start exercising daily, as that will help you relax.
Hope this information was helpful. Happy quitting.
