How To Increase Diet And Stop Shaking?

Im really worried about my friend. Shes not acting like her usual self, shes shaking, not eating and she feels really ill. Shes really scared to go to the doctor, incase she finds out it is something really bad! Shes only 13 and shes asking me for advice. Do you know what her problem might be and what advice i could give to her.

Hello and welcome to HCM,
I have reviewed your query and think kindly of you trying to help her. First, has she asked you for advice?

At this age we need to be observant as to signs and symptoms of eating disorders such as anorexia nervosa, bulemia, restricted eating, body dysmorphia.

If she were my client, I would want to look at her weight status (gain, loss, history of weight changes and current BMI). In conjunction with this, look at her laboratory values for signs/symptoms of malnutrition or deficiencies. So, although she may be afraid to go to the doctor, she should go to get some baseline lab work done.

As to her shaking and not feeling well, without a complete physical history and exam I can offer only my opinion that her problems are resulting from not eating, possibly eating behaviors impacting her health negatively.

Probably the best thing you can do as her friend is to try to make her feel at ease in seeing her primary physician. Explain to her that at her age the body goes through many changes and it would not hurt to have some blood work done, maybe check for anemia. So, encouraging her to get proper care is the best advice I could give to you.

Depending on findings, encourage this young lady to write in or write back yourself if you have questions. We are more than happy to help. Best wishes, Kathryn Shattler, MS,RDN
