Hi,I am Dr. Subhankar Chakraborty (Gastroenterologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My doctor has prescribe a daily potassium pill for me. Almost all of the time this pill simply passes through my system without being absorbed. I have a mild case of IBS and have frequent bowel movements. I have tried taking the pill at different times of the day - after a heavy meal or after a light meal. Nothing works . . . the pill just appears intact in the toilet. Any suggestions how I can help my system absorb the potassium pill??
Hi. Thanks for your query. Noted your history of intact passage of potassium pills through the stool in spite of taking it at different times. You are a known case of an IBS and have frequent bowel movements. This indicated the following things: - It is possible that the potassium pills are not being dissolved in the intestine. Hence I would advise you the following: Ask you Doctor to prescribe yo potassium syrup. This needs to be taken as one teaspoonful in a glass of water and to be taken after taking foods two to three times a day. Also you have to have regular check up of your serum electrolytes just to see whether normal or not. Also needed is to find out the reason why Hypokalemia?
