Hello thanks for asking from HCM for your health related queries
Alcohol is a brain depressant substance and abrupt stoppage of its use after prolonged intake results in withdrawal symptoms. So most of severe alcoholics are advised to get admitted for treatment of alcohol addiction. The treatment consists of acute intensive phase of treatment and maintenance treatment. In acute phase of treatment usually benzodiazepines are given to patients to replace the deficient alcohol. This prevents withdrawal symptoms and then doses of drugs are reduced gradually over 5-7 days. Once individual becomes stabilised then anti craving drugs like ACAMPROSATE can be used. The drug prevent and reduce the craving and help to maintain abstinence. In in-patient care individuals are also given proper supportive treatment for maintenance of nutrition, fluid and electrolyte balance. So advise your family member to visit a hospital nearby and consult a psychiatrist for treatment.
Thanks, hope this helps you. Take care
