hello sir, kindly tell me how to stop chewing gutkha(tobacco) habbits of my husband.he used to chewing it 8-10 per a day.today i saw that he cann't open his mouth widely.he also don't agree to go to doctor with me. so what can i do now ?please suggest me.thanks.
Hello madam, It appears to me that your husband has had a long standing habit of chewing tobacco, which has lead to the symptom of trismus (being unable to open his mouth). This is an important time to take treatment for the problem because repeated tobacco chewing leads to hardening of the mouth's insides layers and difficulty in speaking, eating and opening the mouth. For treating this problem, it is very important for your husband to accept that he has a problem and understand the severity and harm of not stopping the tobacco chewing.
We have many treatment options for such patients, including medicines to reduce cravings (Bupropion or Varineciline). For a few weeks to months, a doctor in your nearby clinic can also help you with Nicotine chewing gums, that help a person to shift from chewing tobacco to chewing the gums and then, slowly stopping it over time.
But the most important factor is for the patient to be motivated for this change in habit. I suggest to you that you may talk to him about the seriousness of the problem of not being able to open his mouth, and share with him the treatment options available. A regular visiting and consultation with a Psychiatrist in your locality will be helpful. I also recommend a referral to a ENT (ear, nose, throat) Specialist for the treatment of trismus.
I hope i have answered your question. Feel free to ask for help in future too.
